KKI LEgal Clinic, Inc.

Pro Bono Legal Services and Educational Opportunities

Who We Are

KKI Legal Clinic, Inc. ("Clinic") is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization that provides pro bono legal services to the Hawai'i community.  Through its mission of assisting those who cannot afford legal services, its volunteers also receive educational opportunities to learn about the law and develop the skills of a trained legal professional.

The Clinic was formerly known as the Kapi'olani Community College Estate Planning Clinic, which was founded in 2018, and provides limited legal services including simple wills, advance health care directives and powers of attorney documents for pro bono clients.

Through the years, we have prepared hundreds of legal documents for low income populations, and since our founding in 2021, we are determined to provide access to justice and educational opportunities to our community.  Through all of our endeavors, we hope to deliver and execute on our mission in an impactful way.

2018 Cohort

Volunteers draft estate planning documents for pro bono estate planning clients.  They are well-equipped to meet with clients and draft their legal documents, while under the supervision of an attorney licensed in the state of Hawaii.

2019 Cohort

The estate planning clinic provides to pro bono clients actual legal documents, including a will, advance-health care directive, power of attorney and POLST document.

2020 Virtual Cohort

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have held the clinic virtually by scheduling meetings via Zoom to keep everyone safe.  Since 2018, we have prepared more than 100 estate planning documents for our pro bono clients.

"Actual application and interaction of theoretical concepts learned in the program."

"The ability to apply learned theory and practices to a "real" client!"

"Being able to get the hands on experience of everything we learned in class and practice it on real clients."

Did you find the estate planning clinic to be beneficial, and if so, how?

"The KKI Law Estate Planning Clinic was definitely beneficial in that the hands-on experience helped me to be engaged in the process. It taught me how important it is to be thorough not only in the interview and questioning process, but also with the completion of the legal documents."

"Absolutely beneficial. Further illustrates the practical application of skills and knowledge taught in the program."

"Absolutely! There is nothing like actual application of lessons learned in class. Ms. Koide is a role model and mentor to her students. I try my best to emulate her in deed and attitude."

"Yes, it was beneficial to have this clinic since we are studying to be paralegals I think practicing with real clients was the most valuable thing we did. For someone who is not in the legal field currently this gave me a great sense of what my future career could be like."

"Most Definitely. The practical skills help boost my confidence and professional experience."

This is what our clients had to say about their estate planning clinic experience.

“Jessica was completely competent and comfortable with the process. She fielded my many questions flawlessly, deferring one or two in order to be certain. The work products provided were indistinguishable from what a downtown attorney supplied (by previous arrangement) for thousands of dollars. My high expectations of the Estate Planning Clinic were exceeded and it benefited everyone involved. Thank you so very much for the opportunity to participate.” – Estate Planning Clinic Client

“I was extremely impressed with my experience with the estate planning clinic! Cheniel was professional, well-prepared, and was able and willing to interpret legal speak into common language. She was friendly, competent, and she answered my questions without bias or subjective opinion. I would have gladly paid for the level of service I received - mahalo nui!” – Estate Planning Clinic Client
